A New Health Point for Hillingdon’s 2017 Heart Month

A new health point has opened in Uxbridge library this weekend as part of the Heart Month, an annual national awareness campaign.

Launched on Saturday 4th of February, this new service proposes free drop-in health check to Hillingdon residents aged between 40 and 74, along with young people between the age of 17 and 24.

The health point will be supervised by Brunel Pharmacy and will be offering services such as advice from a pharmacist, check up of symptoms and follow up information after diagnosis. The council also explained that this clinic would mainly focus on topics such as blood pressure, cholesterol tests, sexual health and smoking.

Cllr Richard Lewis (Cabinet Member for Central Services, Culture and Heritage) commented, “We want our residents to be healthy and happy and these sessions offer a great opportunity to do just that”. The initiative was also acclaimed by residents, such as Jordan Murray, 22, living on Royal Lane, who explained, “It’s such a great idea, and obviously it’s much easier than waiting for hours in line at the GP or hospitals”.

This service comes in a time of real need as Jonathan Ashworth, Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary reported “a third of hospital need urgent help to cope with the numbers of patients coming through the door”. He also mentions that the “systematic underfunding” of health services have led them to be overwhelmed, resulting in “more patients languishing on trolleys and in ambulance queues”.

This initiative was launched as part of the National Heart Month, which is an annual awareness month, during which the councils encourages people to make small changes towards a healthier lifestyle.

In Hillingdon, the month began on Friday the 3rd of February with a health fair in the Uxbridge Library, during which residents were able to seek advices from local health providers. The initiative, which aims at promoting healthiness and wellbeing, along with offering professionals’ advice, will continue until the end of February with a range of activities around the council.
